May 2013

By Cathy Sobocan

May is here! It's a great time to get out and meet new people. In this issue, some tips on networking...

What's the number one mistake made at business networking events?

Trying to make a sale is the number one faux pas.
hand shake Why?
Networking is about meeting people and building relationships. Once someone gets to know you, it's more likely they'll buy a product or service from you instead of a stranger.

Here are some networking tips:

1. Make it your goal to get to know people. Ask those you meet to tell you about who they are and what they do. Make it about them instead of you.

2. Hand out your business card when asked for your business card.

3. If you forget someone's name, be honest. Make it about you. "I can't believe I work in communications and I'm having a problem processing everyone's name tonight. I'd so appreciate it if you could refresh me on your name."
