Persistence Pays Newsletter- Over Comming Barriers

Persistence Pays

Over Coming Barriers
March 2013

Dear Jim,

I wanted to share an article that appeared in the Spectator on March 22nd. It shared some great advice that I think all of us can learn from. You see in all my years of working with people, so many have shared about unresolved issues that happen in their business and personal lives. In times of stress, arguments seem to rise to the surface and then it is a tug of war as to who is going to apologize first. Life is too short to hold on to anger and not love with our whole hearts. As we head into Easter, Passover and Good Friday, I thought the timing of forgiveness was perfect for this article.

The article was called Barriers to Making Up After an Argument by Jeff Herring and Maritza Parra.

Arguments, disagreements, fights. They come to all relationships, no matter how good the relationship may be.

It's been said that the best part of arguments is the making up.

True, yet there are so many things that can get in the way of making up. Let's take a look at the top three barriers to making up and what to do instead.

Make up Barrier 1 - You go first! Out of pride, you think that you must wait for the other person to apologize first before you can make up. Put two strong personalities together and this strategy can lead to lots of silence.

What to do instead: Compete to see who can be the first to apologize. Yes, really. Only for the strong of heart.

Make up Barrier 2 - The right to be right. This is a nice cousin to pride. Fighting for the right to be right can cause people to argue and say things they don't even believe, just to get to be right.

What to do instead: Realize that fighting to be right means you get to be right at the expense of the relationship. Giving up being right is the act of a strong person.

Make up Barrier 3: I don't know what to say. Some people don't know how to make up because they don't know what to say. So instead they stay stuck and wait, depending on the other person to make the first move.

What to do instead: Say: "I really don't like it when we argue. I'm sorry, let's make up. And then let's talk about how to have this not happen again."

The next time there is distance in the relationship due to any of the barriers above, grab the tips above and get ready to make up. McClatchy-Tribune

This article really spoke to me. You see I have been at the hospital almost every day since the third week of January. A dear uncle of mine fell and broke his hip and passed and two days after the funeral my mom went in the hospital as she was misdiagnosed for two months and walked on a severed alkalis tendon which required surgery and she will be in a cast for four months and they are waiting to put her in a rehab facility and we are not sure how long she will be there. When families go through stresses such as these, emotions are high and intelligence is low. Some handle stress by blowing up at others and some handle stress by staying quiet and keeping it all inside. I'm not sure where you are right now in your life; however, if there is someone you are angry at or have unsettled issues with, why not break one of those barriers today. Trust me; you will feel so much better when you do. My sister and I never fight and over the last week or so things got tense and we had not spoken for over a week. So when I read this article I picked up the phone and called her and read it to her. We both had some tears and said I'm sorry. It doesn't matter what the issues are, it can be a small thing that blows out of proportion. They key is to acknowledge the upset, say sorry and forgive.

Calcium - Are you getting enough?

As we age, our bones leach calcium.

We are taught that milk contains calcium, but the calcium found in milk is actually very difficult to absorb ... and here's why:
·         According to Frank A. Oski, MD, former physician-in-chief at John Hopkins Children's Hospital, "Only foods with a calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of 2:1 or better should be used as a primary source of calcium".  The ratio of calcium to phosphorus in cow's milk is 1:1. This ratio causes the phosphorus to combine with the calcium in the digestive tract, preventing the absorption of calcium.
·         Also, the process of pasteurization causes casein (the main milk protein) to attach to the calcium, forming indigestible calcium caseinate, which cannot be absorbed or utilized by the human body.

You would think that supplementation is the solution - right? Wrong.

Calcium is one of the most challenging minerals to absorb when taking supplements. As a registered nutritionist, I rarely recommend calcium supplementation.

The best way to absorb calcium is by eating whole foods that are high in calcium ... or by drinking herbal tea also high in calcium.

Did you know that red raspberry leaf, red clover and stinging nettle leaves are high in calcium?

Infusion is the best way to ensure you are getting the maximum amount of calcium available in your herbal teas. An infused cup of stinging nettle tea contains approximately 500 mg of calcium, according to Susun Weed, herbalist and author.

To infuse tea, add loose herbs or a tea bag to a tea pot with a lid (a glass mason jar works as well) and pour hot water over the herbs or tea bag. Place the lid on the tea pot or Mason jar and steep for 20 - 40 minutes. Voila ... infused tea.

There are also many foods that are high in calcium, they are:

Almonds                Brazil nuts                  Beet greens                        Broccoli                Chard                        Collards                                   Kale                      Kidney beans            Okra                            Parsley                  Parsnips                     Raisins
Sea vegetables       Sesame seeds            Walnuts

Calcium absorption is also dependent on: protein, magnesium, phosphorous, and vitamin D.

Certain foods and medications inhibit the absorption of calcium, they include: excessive intake of oxalates and phytates (found in spinach and unleavened whole wheat products), alcohol, coffee, sugar, diuretics, tetracycline, aluminum containing antacids, and phosphates.  Stress also reduces the absorption of calcium.

You can see that absorbing calcium is complex, however, not impossible.

My advice to get enough calcium ... drink at least one cup of infused herbal tea each day that is known to be high in calcium, switch to almond milk, eat lots of greens like broccoli, kale and collards, and introduce sea vegetables into your diet (as long as you are not on thyroid medication).

There is a great way to grow your own herbs and leafy greens this spring with a unique invention called Tower Garden -- Tim Blank, horticulturist, created this brilliant system for growing fruit, vegetables and herbs. Check out this YouTube video explaining Tim's journey with Tower Garden.

Wishing you good health and excellent calcium absorption,

More Fruits & Veggies! Tips to Healthy Eating Lifestyle!
   By Jon Yaneff

Are you looking to add more fruits and vegetables to your diet? Canada's Food Guide suggests that children eat 4-6, teens 7-8, and adults 7-10 servings of fruits and vegetables per day.

You may perceive that eating healthy is a particular diet. It's not - it's a lifestyle. Diets fade, yet lifestyle changes will stand the test of time.

Here are some tips to get started:

1) Transition slowly -- drink a green smoothie with your regular not-so-healthy regime.

2) Have courage -- when starting on a healthy eating pattern, there will be people around you that aren't going to be accepting. Having the courage and commitment is very important in your transition.

3) Compassion -- have compassion with yourself and accept that baby steps are the way to lasting change.

4) Be creative - eat the colours of the rainbow. Being creative with your food and trusting your instincts are good methods to help you transition into a healthier life.

5) Change perception -- tradition and culture may play a part in how you feel when consuming certain foods. Chocolate, candy or chips may give you a feel good sensation. As you progress into your lifestyle change your taste buds will change along with you.

6) Be Patient -- when you're starting to incorporate good quality foods into your life, be patient and have fun with it. You'll discover a new food regime soon enough that will appeal to your taste buds - it will just take some time and commitment.

Journey of Leadership

In journey of life we come to point in our journey where we ask ourselves questions as to what we want to do in our life and the impact it will make on others.

I had been raised by great parents, gone to school and done very well,  I got to point in early 2003 where I ask myself the question What is my journey all about?  What impact have I made?

So it began the steps of success seeking out people of success who I could learn from. In a few short months I met two amazing men who become my mentors. I would learn about business, life and success in a rapid rate and begin to take ownership of my life, making it not just an ordinary but an extraordinary life!

It has its highs and lows and there were lots of lessons to learn along the way. I began to make great connections with amazing entrepreneurs and professionals who became part of my journey of success.

In 2008 I wrote three articles for the Toronto Public Library on Mentorship, Networking and How to market and promote you, through the encouragement  of entrepreneurial friends I successfully leveraged  the articles into numerous paid and complimentary speaking engagements in Toronto.

As I continued to share my insights on the power of having great mentors and the impact they had made on my journey.  The article on mentorship ended become book “How to attract mentors for business, life and success”  I have shared at career expos, schools and entrepreneurial events.

As my journey continued I came across great book  “360 Degree Leader” by John C. Maxwell and world renowned speaker and writer on leadership and its impact on the world. He shared great insights and stories on leadership all over the world.

In 2012 I got hired by social media company and began speaking all over the Toronto region. It was an interesting moment in my journey evolving and speaking and sharing on other topics as well. I had now become the mentor for many professionals and entrepreneurs.

I had come full circle where I was being the leader and encourage and empowering others to succeed. I had received great feedback that began to get verbally and online regarding the impact I had made on others to succeed in their journey.

You can also do the same by take steps every day to become a better you in current journey and have the opportunity to lead others to a great future
