Spotlight: Marc Gordon

Recently had spoken at Initiative TO on "How to attract a Mentor in Business, Life and Success" throughout the day there were speaker who I had shared the stage. Marc Gordon had a presentation that was funny and engaging.

1st. Many of the business you had started were prior to social media of today. You made it work through work ethic and commitment. With the explosion of online videos do you think businesses can still connect with consumer online effectively and create long-term business

Marc Gordon response:
I believe that "connecting" with a client, or market, is done on a level that goes far beyond social media, videos, email, or web sites. The fact is that consumers decide what to buy for so many reasons. And these reasons can change overnight. Something as simple as a celebrity endorsement, bad press, or school yard influences can render the most aggressive online campaigns ineffective. And while video and other types of web marketing tools can have some form of influence, at the end of the day the consumer will buy products for the same reason since mass consumption became a reality: because they fill a practical or emotional need.

2nd. What advise do you have for entrepreneurs looking for business opportunities going into 2011?

Marc Gordon response:
My advice to entrepreneurs would be to focus on the quality and innovation of the product and service first. Great marketing will not compensate for a lousy product. Also, do not get swept up in the belief that social media must be an essential part of a company's marketing program. I have seen many businesses lose business because they have allocated so many resources to keeping their twitter and Facebook accounts active, rather than focus on customer service and product development.
